Save Up To $2480 With These Reddit Hacks

Save Up To $2480 With These Reddit Hacks

One of my main goals for the past year was to improve my personal finances. To achieve this, I dedicate a substantial amount of time each week to researching strategies, tips, and advice on how to pay off credit card debt, save more money, fund my retirement accounts, and invest wisely. While I often turn to traditional experts, such as financial advisors, accountants, and bookkeepers for guidance, I have also found alternative resources to be valuable.

I began to explore financial advice on TikTok and found many useful tips on how to save more, invest more intelligently, and carefully evaluate cryptocurrency opportunities. I listened to podcasts from individuals who, though not experts, shared their personal experiences of financial mistakes and successes. Additionally, I also decided to be open to suggestions from friends and family, which led me to explore financial advice on Reddit.

After browsing  personal finance subreddits, and after spending several hours doing so, I gained access to interesting and unique advice that has helped me save an extra $2,500 so far on 2022.

Let me share them with you:

Buying Household Necessities In Bulk

I reside in a small apartment in NY with limited cabinet and closet space, and never considered purchasing bulk items due to storage constraints. However, after reading a suggestion from a Reddit user on how buying in bulk can save money, I decided to give it a try. I visited a store that sold groceries and household items in bulk, spent $200 on 20 items, including toiletries, paper towels, frozen foods, and cleaning supplies, and have been able to use these items over the course of the year. Upon calculating how much I would have spent if I had not bought in bulk and instead purchased items on a weekly basis, I found that I had saved over $850 in just six months on the first half of 2022.

There are also a number of reasons why people choose to buy in bulk:

  1. Cost savings: Purchasing items in bulk can often lead to significant savings, as bulk items are often sold at a lower price per unit than smaller quantities of the same item.

  2. Convenience: Buying in bulk can save time and effort, as it reduces the need to frequently purchase small amounts of an item.

  3. Longer shelf life: Some items, like non-perishable food and household supplies, have a longer shelf life when purchased in bulk, so they can be stored for a longer time without expiring.

  4. Less packaging waste: Buying in bulk often means less packaging waste, which is beneficial for the environment.

  5. Small business support: Some small businesses rely on bulk purchases to make a decent margin, and buying in bulk helps support the small retail business.

However, it is worth noting that buying in bulk may not always be the most cost-effective or practical option, it depends on individual's usage, storage and budget. It's important to consider your own needs and resources before making a bulk purchase.

Visiting Websites That Give Items For Free

There are numerous platforms available on the internet that allow individuals to purchase used goods from others, however, thanks to a suggestion from a user on Reddit, an alternative approach to save money was discovered - obtaining items for free. The user recommended websites such as Freecycle or Buy Nothing, where individuals freely give away items. Utilizing these websites, I was able to acquire two kitchen chairs (with a retail value of $125 each), a desk and chair set (which retails for $325), a nightstand (which retails for $175), and several other decorative items (which in total would have cost $400).

Segregating Income

I have discovered that an effective way to save money is by concealing credit cards and making purchases only with cash. However, certain stores do not accept cash or there are instances where I forget to bring cash with me and need to make a purchase.

One Reddit user proposed a solution to this problem and recommended using a checking account as a "cash" for the month. They deposit a certain amount into the account every month or week and use that as their budgeted spending. Any additional income is directed towards savings. I have implemented this technique for two months and it not only aids in staying within budget, but it has also enabled me to save an additional $300 per month.

Looking For Discounts

I was already aware of the suggestion to contact service providers, such as phone, cable, and internet companies, to inquire about discounts or more affordable plans. However, it was a Reddit comment that inspired me to take action and make these calls in February.

By making these calls, I was able to negotiate a savings of $15 per month on my internet and cable bundle and $25 per month on my phone bill. As a result, I have saved $200 in the past year.

Stocking Up On Food

A majority of my monthly expenses often goes towards food, whether it's eating out at restaurants or purchasing groceries. On Reddit, several individuals recommended a strategy for saving money on food by stocking up on sale items at the grocery store that have a long shelf life in the freezer, such as bread, meat, and frozen meals.

I investigated when certain items were on sale at my local grocery store and purchased them in bulk a few months ago. This enabled me to avoid spending money on those items every week and allowed me to take advantage of the sale prices. As a result, I was able to save $100 in total.

Final Thoughts

I saved exactly $2481 after computing my finances from last year. You can certainly do these too! They are actually saving habits which would add up to thousands of dollars at the end of the day!
